hello and well good morning cuz hello and welcome good morning Boyle Heights community of school buenos dias Alex Boyle Heights we're going to wait a few minutes for participants to join the masses but I don't know if they won those I guess they were not going to go through those participants this hello and welcome good morning Boyle Heights community of schools in Benito's buenos dias a la comunidad Boyle Heights Welcome to our virtual town hall meeting we are honored that you are with us today mine is Maricela Sanchez and I'm the director of schools very proud to serve the ball Heights community of schools as families join us please select your language for interpretation English or Spanish please go to the logo the globe icon at the bottom of your screen and please English or Spanish if you'd like to hear the meeting in either of those language bienvenido sea buenos dias gracias por estar con Nosotros Maricela Sanchez boil boil boil Heights weather Las familias en espanol nacion.com to start this morning we know that it is National principals month and we want to honor all our principles with in Boyle Heights with this short video thank you once again to all our principles in the ball Heights community of school who each and every day or of service for Boyle Heights families sorry about that again for those of you who just joined us and need language support we ask that you please identify if you'd like to listen this in English or Spanish click on the globe system at the bottom of your screen what a nice couch are in English on Espanol inconel global global our agenda for today we're very excited that we have two of our community members here with us we have our board member representing Board District 2 we have Monica Garcia and their sacrifices here on her behalf we have mister me Santiago our assembly member for the 53rd District also will be reviewing with you covid-19 vaccination efforts presenting also promoting a college-going culture a through G what is college applications and FAFSA DREAM Act and at the end we'll have time for announcements and question-and-answer so throughout this presentation we encourage you to ask questions our team members are here and they will be answering many of your questions placed in the qna and with that I'd like to introduce our team members are Community Schools administrator Daniel gettinger our operations coordinator Jessica casares servicing our schools in English language arts Elementary is Patricia Varela and then in secondary English darts is Paola Martinez in the area of mathematics are coordinator for elementary and he's bathroom metal and our new coordinator for secondary is Shaniqua Honeycutt Maria Chan is our instruction data coordinator Michelle corrao advisors working with schools and families and servicing special education programs and services for students in our schools is James Pearl and Nadia Hector Ybarra support schools with mental health with with the address support schools with instructional Technology Solutions and lastly David Geist on is our parentage patient support assistant that is answering the phones in our welcome center and is always ready and willing to help when is today from our local District East office is Veronica Giovanni who's the parent coach Local District East also current coach with Local District East is loud about your loss Janet Montoya is here with us today was the administrator overseeing special ed programs for Local District East and Renee Anita is here who is the director with Early Education and it's my pleasure to present to you today and have with us Teresa Cortez who will be speaking on behalf of Monica Garcia thank you Miss Sanchez Robles a good morning everyone and I'm the director of being important to I wanted to share a few words on behalf of board member Garcia as we continue to keep our school and Community save we want to think our teachers administrators and staff for their work and support we also would like to extend our heart thank you to our principles for the word and for being a beacon of light for their students and Community during this time we know it hasn't been easy and they turn up every day and supported their commute we appreciate you all and thank you so much we also want to continue celebrating College awareness month or administrators principles and staff along with our College Partners want our students to succeed Argo importance of a hundred percent graduation and for our students to go to a college and career path so if you haven't seen our Facebook I bought two for a go go inside lay please go ahead and join us there I will I'm at the link on the chat and then lastly the name you are safe and fun Halloween. Santiago will be saying a few words mr. Will you be able to share your screen yes I will one second go ahead number yes and thank you very much for allowing me to come on today and I want to say thanks to all our community who is on and go to a fought hard to keep us all together again during this pandemic and tell the school leadership and principal and everybody else who may be on or his help this together the legislator I've been that directly impact our neighborhood going to start off with one of the bigger pieces that we did and that's the issue of that site and this year we got over and I'm going to speak and rounded numbers today if it's okay with everyone we got over about three hundred million dollars to compete you cleaning at work environmental disaster that we have ever faced in the west coast basically and we know it as X like what what those dollars mean is we're going to be able to get more houses quicker after I cleaned up because some of the contaminants out got out about 1.7 miles from impacted the bullhide serious significantly and the district those were the ones I doubt we're heavily impacted that's so that is going to be a significant benefit to what happens if your house is impacted by a they go out there they passed figure out whether it's one of the ones that needs to be done just leaving like high risk the repairs could be anywhere between 30 to $80,000 in terms of different sorts of work cleaning mitigation and new implanted my foot up or a or a or trees excetera a long list of mint accept depending on your situation they go out and clean up that sort of your front yard and backyard and whatever else you been impacted by that I want to jump into something that's how we were able to access dollars like we've got money for help Graphics because we thought that was incredibly important to continue to multi Arts opportunities for a Ferrari young people and now will be able to expand self help Graphics in the ability to promote art and give those classes start also we funded by half a million dollars the YMCA Capital Construction and that'll help to build a community rooms and a center be able to provide a lot of the work that they're doing today and since most people know the YMCA gym in Tulsa commercial service provider during the pandemic and a lot of that a lot of the facility will be built to the money that we were able to get a state out of the career that some of you also may remember every Street School the school is is over on Breed Street next to Cesar Chavez little bit north of where you guys are at school that is and we were able to get over 10 million dollars for that and what that's going to transform it and who is a community center that will be able house a lot of the community services in our community needs what need to be Immigration Services mental health care services and the the reason for getting the dollars was to renovate the area but provide that much-needed community space that we the book for a woman trying to do community programming and bring in resources into our community order pieces along with you guys have seen more activity on cleaning off the off ramp the S&P $1 able to get are continuing to clean up Summit altran's area and in fact you may have noticed this weekend at the 101 was shut down both to help fix some of the pieces on the 6th Street Bridge with the state is heavily involved in funding and also the repair from there on the 101 as he going to downtown Los Angeles some of the some of the maintenance that needed to be done and that's sort of work and closures have to be planned months in advance what we're doing them across the district and it go to somebody off ramps to have been getting proved that we do ask for Community participation and helping us because we do clean these up and then sometimes weeks sometimes months later they become again so what is helpful is it let us know but also when we do community clean up that you might participate in some of that cuz that's kind of what we've done and direct direct dollars Into the Mystic and some legislative things that we did that we think will improve our communities as well as we change the law and the governor signed it for adult children to be able to have their parents on their health care in this really is a game-changer because there are people who fall through the cracks who may not be qualified through Medi-Cal who may not qualify for Medicaid or any of the other any other government programs and currently do not have to do not have to cover our parents so if I'm going to go up if I'm an adult child and I and I go out to the private market place and get healthcare insurance like the ACA they're not required to adult parent but we change that law to allow that to happen because if we do that it actually does cost a lot left to get Healthcare to our parents and their parents not important to me as well Senator night mode extremely hard to make sure that folks that were undocumented 50 years of age received Health Care coverage do not account and that change before it was 65 now there are still Medical Services in emergencies which it covers but General basic health care coverage wasn't available before and now the law allows us and that'll start about next me so for so for the school community and our general Community we're going to be promoting cuz has plenty of people have been left behind without the ability to have health care coverage because Medicare won't cover them and nothing has changed we'll have that opportunity to give a talk talk so I want remind everybody hear that next year we're going to begin the sign-ups to allow people who are 50 years and above to get health care coverage if there are documented in above the age of 50 currently the law said under the age of 26 next year will change also. above the age of 50 which would be a big change free community college now there's been a lot of confusion because the federal government was trying to enact a free Community College you all remember that we did that a few legislature and even during the pandemic we were able to keep those dollars and so so Community College will continue to be free next year to try to make some Porsche decal State education for free I will ask you to engage it in that work with us in a little bit about what we did during the pandemic and then I want to get to something that's really important to me after that look we have fought strong and hard if you recall for the very beginning to give food distribution in Ark we're still continuing to do that because we know that it was hard people were laid off and some of our efforts ranged all the way from Korea Town to the one at to Boyle Heights to Scenic Hudson Park in downtown Los Angeles that I represent we're helping thousands of people who we are on food assistance that will still continue to do that the lines get a little bit shorter and I want to thank those here who participated to do that and we sounded the alarm when we weren't getting the proper code in our communities it and we were able to change them do sponges in the state so you saw more covid testing and likewise with vaccines and that we are still having some hesitancy from folks in our general Community or not getting the vaccine I asked folks to encourage everyone in our neighborhood to get the vaccine I'm pretty sure almost everybody on this call if not everybody has gotten it but it's important do so and if you're eligible for the booster you should go get the booster currently it's about 65 certain classifications of people are some essential Workers Health Care workers or people who have underlying conditions or even individuals who are in close to this by contact with other people are eligible for the Moon now we are waiting for next week in the states already preparing with a Fed on getting the orders from all the different clinics in anticipation of the federal government that. The FDA approve back seats for kids between the ages of five and 11 so we're already starting to work with the clinic starting to make sure every weekend applications in for for a vaccine that were hoping that everybody who is healthy and eligible if not we're going to charge him to get to do so and also for their children I'm so we may come back to you to ask you for help in spreading the word or a joining us to go get our kids blessing because it's the difference between life and death the only way we get back to any sort of normality in the world is people getting vaccinated there's no other way around it now I'm going to jump over real quick to something that is incredibly important and we have we spent a lot of time get this done a lot of hard work and now it's even harder to get implementing our communities and that's the issue of rental assistance we fought extremely hard in and you going to see a screen pop up on your on your computer weird we at the state legislature on extremely hard combination of fed dollar $8 to do a hundred percent rental assistance in this this this is available to anyone it does not matter your immigration status does not matter whether your document it does not matter whether you're undocumented in fact we don't even ask the question all that matters is number one it was covid relief phone number to and number two you had to be income-eligible so if you could pay your rent because of covid and if you meet the income threshold which is about the LA region about $95,000 for a family of four if you're below that you may be eligible for a 100% rental assistance on the rent that you missed and in fact we have to meet any members in our name Herbalife which I just talked to the weekend who went through our program and one lady Community leader she just posted on Facebook today if you look at my Facebook I just got qualified for 14000 110 back rent if you not been able to ask for immigration status you just have to be related and income-eligible and so people ask me what is it that I need you need identification so we need to be able to identify who you are you need to be able to demonstrate that it was Kobe related or you sick and couldn't work it's me your family gets sick you'd watch over them and couldn't work if you get fired because I know what the job was no longer available work hours reduce a number of things that happened if you could you not find work etc etc etc we need. roof shopping cart so it could be your year of your W-2 it could be your tax returns it could be your paycheck stub it could even be a letter from your employer saying that you had hardship at work you don't have any of those the application allows you to self verify under / juba that this actually did happen in this is important because we know that if you were working in the restaurant closed or the hotel room close at and you're not going to do this for you you can sell verify on the application under this did happen and that's enough to get me to get you a qualified and then you you will hear back what would I would I would there is a small possibility of paying for future rent that's a month-by-month basis if you'd like for example you just got laid off and maybe you paid all your at the past and you're moving forward and you don't have a way of you can plant that now there is utility assistance in some cases for folks to have a code utilities or four-door utility now we are prioritizing back rent not futuring and we're doing it all across it just pick some of you may have seen some of our Workshop whether they be in Koreatown to clean a car to park downtown to see Hunting Park or or Campbell Heights. If you could scroll back down for a second I want the blue flyer crap I want you to everybody here. Just pay attention to the hours please this is really important. We're over at the YMCA we are office in coordinate with the YMCA in fact we got him a small Grant do the store to work and and the hours that we're doing this is Monday through Thursday to 5 Tuesdays we're doing 9 to 4 and Friday is where do they buy 93 of those are all the different people are doing rental assistance over there but we do recommend that you make an appointment we tell this to every just show up and you may have to wait we did one in Hunting Park this week with the two of them we are hundreds and hundreds of people show up the good news is we were able to help some people down and put them in the future case we get line sometimes there's one person sometimes sometimes there is doesn't make it easy on yourself and the number is right there to 13 I'm using I don't have my glasses on 434 1746 and this fire is incredible so I'm going to ask everybody to take out your cell phone and take a picture of that fire and it's right here in our very own backyard belies I'm going to give you another five seconds four three two one now if you could go to the next flower thank you these are some of the other organizations that we are working with it to Breezy the program is housing is key if you look at your cell phone right now and you put housing is key you when you hit enter it goes romantically to a State website and that in the application is there you will need an email address if you don't have an email address get an email address if you need help getting Mina an email address when you show up to this location I do hope you there but you know you can also do this from home we did the website in the way that you could I just apply from home you don't need to go to bed to to seek help if you do we have places that are doing help so right there we pulled up the website housing is key when you go down you'll see I do like when I meant that or covid-19 rash relief and you just punch one of those and when you punch it yo you start getting automatically in there what you will need to do is set up an account apply today looks hard but it's not people it it takes us about 15-20 minutes I could do for somebody but the hardest part is folks having all their documents and get their documents in order to show you how gazelle could you pop pop in an address so up here you pop in where you live so let's say you could do our office if you want to go 50 yeah West 4th Street and we're just doing MI just agreed to get kind of an idea are you all good it's probably not and it tells us what you fiction were in and then you can finally begin the application process so it really just wants to know where you're at so that they know what the what the income threshold eligibility is excetera rueter you an owner of the property or I am a renter of the property it really is easy everybody seen this just ask you are you busy you belong to any try no or the answer might be yes in my case of snow which was your little bit just to kind of get an idea let's say 3 and then here's where the income threshold is I'm saying three people in the house as long as I make $85 hello Lexi and it goes like the application if you start that's as hard as it gets folks that is a part of the game got props ready up to you do need an email address so this is the part that you set up an account but from here on we'll we'll stop at here but you guys get the picture in terms of how easy it is to apply once you break once you've done those It'll ask you to set up an account and when you go in the account so you can do this from home at some point in time maybe we could do it works out for you guys and have those people who are who think they might need help and might be eligible to apply sometimes it matter days a matter we you get a response I remember thousands and thousands of people are flying so if you don't hear response the next day or couple days no and no one is ignoring and no there's no reason to call they are processing thousands and thousands today it's always a big state in the state of California thousand so will take a little bit to reply back but the good thing is if you give people apply in our neighborhood the law protects them from getting evicted until next April 1st that would that piece of paper your landlord cannot evict a person once you apply for that is a lot of other Jews in the endzone 2nd tails to buy what the general thing I want to chill with you is the hundred percent recluses so I know I spoke a little bit longer than that then maybe anticipated but I wanted to make sure that I explained that we went through that because it's such an important program but incredibly hard to do with the state and I want to make sure that our community is eligible for it thank you and takes advantage obviously thank-you assemblymember Santee I'll go for that credible information also your advocacy on behalf of our community and all the programs and our resources that you've brought to the Boyle Heights Community I'm we appreciate your partnership for being here way to address the community and speaking of which I do want to do give a special shout-out to all the folks joining us on Facebook instead of his new family member Santiago mentioned his Facebook page many of the resources are available they're so if you want you can go over to his page take a look at those resources and then hop right back to ours to rejoin the meeting and join right now I just started if I'm look friends join the information there we post where the workshops are happening we post a resource is constantly so post a flyer today for the one in Bullhead so that you guys can download it from there and just go and joint joint it we're pumping out information vaccines what were you doing rental assistance internet assistant all kinds of stuff thank you very much for having me on you absolutely and speaking of social media and I want to share a great story with our community I know that many of you are following us on Twitter Instagram posts last week we had a Community member contact us on Twitter say hey I lost my dog can you help out a different Community member messaged us on Facebook and said hey we we found a dog right and here's the picture we were able to connect the two and it was successful reunions of Benji the dog and so we do engage with our community on on social media don't hesitate to contact us with questions than it's like it then we member Santiago constantly getting you the most updated information via those Channel so with that said again we want to thank the assemblymember and we'll transition on just talking a little about covid vaccination take care of thanks for being with us so with covid vaccination you've heard from us if you've heard from other staff members with LAUSD that's for students ages 12 and over there is going to be a requirement that's that's soon to be vaccinated for covid-19 to participated in person learning the chart that is displayed on the screen right is the number of eligible students 12 and over at each of our school we want to give a special shout-out to two schools within our community that are all buddy over the 70% Mark for vaccinations those are Boyle Heights High School leading the charge with over 86% of their students vaccinated and Boyle Heights STEM over 70%. graduations to those school I'm we're going to continue working with all our school to ensure students have access to vaccine and are supported on with the uploading process I do want to go over timeline with our families today do students ages 12 and over who participate in extracurricular program need to have their second or final dose by an October 31st deadline after that 12 and over cannot participate in this extracurricular programs if they're not vaccinated for everyone else all other students if you can go back to myself the first deadline is November 21st so that you can be back to mated by December 19th for the s o I asked you to turn 12 they have 30 days after their birthday to get that first though we are supporting you with us submitting proof of vaccination to La unified please don't hesitate to give our office a call if you need assistance the process is very simple take a photo of the vaccine card that your child received the day he or she was vaccinated log into the daily pass that you use each and every day to do the daily health check and submit a photo of the back seat car and then the LAUSD covid response team will go ahead and review that upload and that processing can take up to a week we you can also book vaccine appointments on the daily pass and then the chat will go ahead and post some of those Direction the process is very simple and addition booking appointments when schools have on-site clinic Sand and we've done many and will continue to do so as soon as can bring a paper consent form and actually walk in and get back to mated that day here is a list of upcoming mobile vaccination within our community underlined in red are some of the schools within our community at school so back we'll have a vaccination clinic on November 4th Mendez November 12th Roosevelt and mstma or today actually so if you want to get the backseat cruise on over there let your student who your child who's a student there no and Stevenson on November 4th are we are incentivized thing families to get vaccinated every week La unified is raffling off a number of great prizes to students and their families who have uploaded proof of vaccinations today we have submitted the medical option or conditionally admit it did these flyers highlight some of the great prizes that are going to be a raffled off in the near future do next week to school to Waukee school it can potentially get up to $10,000 to support Athletic program there is LA Laker game tickets $100 Amazon gift card the following week we're talking Beach headphone again the hundred dollar amazon gift card and then the week after that Los Angeles football club game I'm an Amazon gift card so lots of private I also want to let everyone know that as a community of school as we are supporting schools directly with school vaccination intensive schools are developing their plans and at each School site there will be great incentives for get backs mated and upload their proof this week we already got it started students at Roosevelt High School who are showing proof of vaccinations are able to go to the zoo store and get a ticket to the East LA classic free of charge no cost for students are vaccinated so they simply have to show proof go to the student store or side the Dean's office get a voucher and they can go to the store and get that ticket free of charge to the big game Friday night thank you so much dr. gallinger and next dumb Michelle Corral will be sharing with us about how Boyle Heights and are both high schools are promoting a college-going culture and here in Boyle Heights we want to ensure that these three areas are being covered within each School in terms of unawareness ensuring that every student here in Boyle Heights increases awareness and understanding of post-secondary options and resources that they're eligible that the increase passage of a through G courses with a C or better and completion of the requirements necessary for college but they're prepared increasing student aspirations and beliefs in college attainment and develop Knowledge and Skills disposition knowing they do want to go to college and they have the opportunity to choose to access increasing College transfer underrepresented populations and and activities related to College Planning Admissions and financial aid and then again. Elman increasing the number of students enrolling attending persisting and completing call and so next Michelle will review a few of those resources and programs available at Boyle Heights Community Schools and within our schools good morning everyone I'm so I'm like does mention we have the E through G requirements which are eight Sushi courses in high school that students are taking in order for them to be able to successfully complete California State University and the University of California system requirements the goal for a through G Creek Durham is to ensure students have changed course subject knowledge that will effectively prepare them for college that means there is need to take 3 years of history or social science or years of English 2 years of Science 2 years of a language one year of visual performing arts and one year of an oven of a college Alexa and the chat a while also be providing an additional resource for our families and within leusd on my asthma Sanchez mention we do emphasize College awareness and so call LUSD Junior and senior students have received or will receive a college Journal all School sites were mailed out a copy of this item if your child is currently enrolled in the Virtual Academy they can contact The Local District Council coordinator for their coffee until yours arrives you can see a digital version that will be provided in the chat as well and here are a few steps to just give an overview of the college application process the number one do your research oncologist work on your resume and personal assets first off by signing up or taking the SAT or the ACT find money by applying to fastball or the dreamer or even scholarship apply on time to your selected call Angie keep focus by constantly checking your email keeping up your grades and attendance make your choice by reviewing College acceptance offers and selecting the right college for you stay connected by sunny ledfurd schedule a meeting with your new college counselor to help with registering for college courses and here are some couple some reminders for just High School senior so I do have the fast one which it is currently open which is the free application for federal student aid which is a form your child needs to complete in order to receive financial aid from the federal government to pay for college lots of states and also use the fastball to determine which students need financial aid and how much they will receive we also have the California dreamer which allows undocumented and non-resident students who qualify for a non-resident exemption under ab540 to receive certain types of financial aid in addition to California Dream Act also allows eligible students to pay in-state tuition for any public College in California both of these applications are due by March 2nd but it is highly encouraged to submit them as soon as possible and lastly just a friendly reminder there is a very important scholarship which is a Coca-Cola scholarship which is an achievement baseball worship only awarded to high school seniors 150 Scholars are selected year to receive a $20,000 scholarship the deadline is three days away on October 31st at 2 p.m. 2 p.m. Pacific Standard Time thank you so much Michelle Pfeiffer all that information and we're very excited to present to you our Boyle Heights College newsletter and we want to ensure that everyone is aware both our families and our students and in our newsletter you're able to so sorry I think it's going to it right now let me know if it's not I will be sending it out through mass communication will also be sending it to you through email and text will be posting it on our website and will be posting it on social media again will be sharing you up the date of formation regarding college regarding opportunities for scholarships and regarding any volunteer opportunities and also x-grip extracurricular activities I don't know if you know but October 19th we had FAFSA workshop with our community partner innercity struggle so you're able to listen to that workshop and where they walk you through different sections of the FAFSA and different sections of the DREAM Act we have information regarding the FAFSA in terms of infographics to help you understand how the FAFSA financial aid works the journals you can link to the journal for seniors and juniors and then we have monthly information will also be translating this it is translated into Spanish here it is in terms of information in terms of timeline you may have done in August but it's not too late you could still do some of these so these are checklist that will provide information to you the SAT although it may not be a requirement we suggest that your child on just take the SAT or the S act and again different timelines in September both in English and Spanish and again we'll be updating this as we receive information so we're very happy to be sharing that with also Intercity struggle our community partner they put out a newsletter that they send and we'll be sharing it on our website and also on our social media in which they specific share scholarships with you and also extracurricular activities and program opportunities so this is also a great resource that will be linking up in our newsletter as well as posting on our social media and website and next Veronica Theory where it offers online reading and free resource Sims 4 all ages and at all reading levels the standard the smarter balanced assessment which students from 3rd through 11th grade will be taking around April or May so these are resources where students can log on and take practice test for free so we encourage you to use that and that has actually in English language arts and math and science for Alpacas students who have not reclassified and are classified as English Learners we know that they'll be taking the alpacas vestment this year as well and so they have the opportunity to take practice test for you to review what they will be test on and lastly wide open school our resources and activities in Spanish for learning at home so again will be sharing these also on our website and social media we have some great parent meetings coming up we've partnered with powermylearning to offer parent workshops 1st on November 8th which is coming up and we know that for elementary we parent conferences coming up the week after and so maybe there's times where you show up to parent conferences and you might not know what questions to ask or you're trying to identify you know which questions are the best questions to help your child back home so they will be reviewing how to share your expertise with teachers again November 8th at 5:30 in English and in Spanish at 6:30 and then
