at this point I am going to hand it over to miss Maricela Sanchez will be facilitating our discussion with our amazing panel principal thank you so much dr. gettinger we are so excited to have seven of our Boyle Heights principles with us today we are very proud of all our principles during the pandemic and distance learning they have shown great leadership and commitment to their schools and communities principles for being here today and they should be joining us now in the panel discussion so we're going to go ahead and start and please start with stating your name your school and what you love about your school so we're going to go ahead and start with Miss Brickell good evening everyone my name is Arianna Draco and I am the proud principal of Boyle Heights STEM Magnet High School and I think one of the things that I'm most proud of is the community and family environment that are small school provides for our entire School community thank you Doctor Salazar greetings everyone Christopher Dena a very thing that makes me very proud of our school is that one day one what are students is going to be president of the United States and you're out there in Boyle Heights president of the United States keep up the good work thank you Doctor Salazar Miss Rodriguez if you going to meet yourself Miss Rodriguez thank you good evening Boyle Heights Community I am Debbie Rodriguez deprived principle of the Second Street Trojan Scholars and what I'm most proud of is the the commitment that the community has to ensuring that their students their children are students come on to schoology everyday and they want to learn and they reach out to us for help so that is how did that for us thank you so much mr. Angulo Buenas Tardes good afternoon everybody I'm learning on Google and I leave Utah Street span school one of the things that I love about my school is are students I love them they make me laugh they make me think about life and make a reflect I miss them thank you we all miss them Miss Gonzalez good afternoon everyone but as much as my name is Patricia Gonzalez and I am the proud principal of Lorena Elementary School in what I love about my school and my community is my students and my amazing staff and support staff that we have and together we've made amazing things and boy do I miss you boys and girls thank you Miss Munoz good afternoon to tell principal at Jenkins Elementary School my name is Christina students and families the rich culture and language in Tradition and I love this entire community of schools in Boyle Heights you have amazing principles here that leadership and I love the collaboration that we all share thank you so much mr. Macias who's everybody Minds Alejandro Macias on the principal Boyle Heights High School home of the Phoenix and one thing that I know about working at Bow high school is that that teamwork of working together with Partners parent student teachers to transform the lights and I should have been a success thank you so much and thank you once again for all of you representing our boys Community Schools so we know that has learning schools of had to come Kate and connect with families in different and creative ways how is your school successfully connected parents with school and Community Resources I think whenever that the things that has helped us the most is that Community feeling that we had even before Leavin so with the new having to adapt I think what we decided to do with to continue with a lot of the same events that we had having a distance learning or the Internet available to all our students and our community what it did is it actually made the world a lot smaller for us were able to bring in a community members professional to that our students receive presentation that are relevant for a possible career people don't have to travel anymore where it used to take 2 hours to come for a 30-minute presentation now literally takes I'm 30 minutes just for the actual presentation I think it does the same thing for our family so I'm leaves are able to engage in a meeting without having to leave the home so I think for us it actually we've seen an increase in Paris involvement through the virtual platforms it made it easier with continued with our presentations for the College and Career Readiness program that we have with professionals we recently last week in fact we professionals come to a virtual presentation for our students project-based learning so are our projects that our students had been working on we did have to modify because of course students can't work together in person so that that has presented some challenges for us but our students were still really proud to Showcase what they've done to a panel of professionals from within the community that have ties to to them or to the neighbor and I think that that's one of the things that we're most proud of and we've been able to do thank you so much thank you for sharing with us that Community feeling and that the world has gotten smaller given we're all virtually connected continuation High School are great conference event is any event that we launched after midterm grades are published are supposed to have words with our partners and our community students and parents McGehee reflection about improving academically are there classes in shared resources in the community it's a proper process of course pass rate has increased because of it and parents students have have comments that they not that they were not aware that so many members are invested in you success some of the Community Partners that we work with our inner city struggle on my family services Community Schools and LAPD Pala program thank you thank you for connecting both our students and our families to those community resource Boyle Heights I'm going to piggyback a little Mike on Easter said absolutely the world has gotten smaller and this virtual space has created brand new and wonderful opportunities as we start with a NASA dentist we have a lot of resources at our school site and that continued in this virtual space we also have a lot of Assets in our Community Partners as both of you have mentioned that have bought bridge program into our school even the spiritual space were able to still continue with low nautical with jazz with jazz with hip hop but don't lose weight programs with r that the kids enjoyed before and then he does so much for that social-emotional development and with our Community Partners we have been able to provide boxes of food and delivered to the home on the weekly basis and White Memorial the YMCA and numerous other agencies that are just dying to come and help with you at the school site but I think the most important resource we have right now is our families we have twice a month virtual chats with the community the community of the feedback on our programming they make us better and stronger so thank you for all your amazing work families you are doing a great job and everyone is doing the best they can thank you so much for the school year in August distance learning was new many of us thanks to your leadership and that about the rest of our principals are schools in families are thriving so share with us some successes that you're schools of had in his first semester, go ahead and start with doctor again Everyone likes greetings and good evening Edina we work so hard to embrace the model of this new world that were in in a we call it the ABCs online learning ABC Robinson adapt adapt students adopting parents are adapting stabbed is adapting to the online virtual learning it to be bald like a tell my students like this no bball were we have to figure it out we have to work hard and figure all the things that we online how do the application how to login how does it mean change your password figure out learning online and see if to connect connect in this new world over in Connect with each other what my boys and girls do our students at Dina connect with her teachers connect with their families connect with their Community connect with online learning resources connect with field trips because again again one day one of our students in Boyle Heights to be president of the United States and the ABCs adapt be bold connect of online learning is Wilbur app now thank you thank you so much let's go ahead and have a culture thank you that's a great doctor Salazar and I think it's beets to the resiliency of our entire unity and the fact that everybody continues to to be you know adopted and be bold and and connect and I think that for our students at Boyle Heights STEM that's been a huge what we've seen throughout the entire semester or students continue to overcome challenges continue to stay connected and we've actually seen an attendance rate increase for the first three months of school from last year we've had a 10% increase a nurse I didn't stutter at 96% attendance rate so thank you to the families and to the students who continue to push forward despite all the challenges cuz there's lots of things that can hold us back from I'm trying again into to make sure that were able to come but I think setting those expectations making it clear to our students that they can and they will and I love your ABC's and for us it's it's continuing with those connection with our students and their families are Ojeda a little bit of an advantage we had an advisory program from before the our students have been in that same group now for two to three or even four years so that's been really helpful to us and we're adding an additional component of Mo social emotional learning I think that's been helpful and then of course you know we always incentivize our students so we we try to do different challenges either via social media them showcasing what they're doing or their spirit I'm in different challenges and I think that our staff has been amazing and I'm sure at at all our school so I think of the what we've been able to do this far is a big reflection of who we are as a community I'm so thank you to our students and to the entire Boyle Heights Community for continuing to push forward thank you so much Miss Gonzalez let's have you and I think I'm going to piggyback on I love you ABC's at what a great way to put it at Doctor satisfied but the same thing as in Stanwood load and we had an amazing increase in attendance I mean our attendance was at 96 98% we had a huge increase 15 percent from where we were also our kind of activity was at the highest we were starting off with you know 90 92% and constantly calling her parents and any little thing and I was so proud of my staff in our parents you know coming for for coming to learn you know show me how to how to login to schoology I want to get my child on so thank you parents you were on it and and are in the learning so those are great success that's because we we we took it upon and and you got on and and are increasing attendance and activity device distribution we did it all and thanks to our parents to our staff and to our students who taught their parents how to learn how to use the device and and all of our parent workshops and everything so I feel like it was a huge success because we got through it and we're still going and and we still have those smiles and I'm looking at those classroom children are happy and I'm taking advantage of the signing and also we're trying to incorporate our Red Ribbon Week are are are we're doing a talent show we're not doing a Christmas program but we're having our say have talent and we're showing off whatever Talent they have and North doing it and we're doing successes but it's it's a community it's a community effort and and I think everybody but it's going back to the ABCs but thank you with Doctor status. thank you everybody thank you thank you for sharing with us some of the some ways that you've all been very resilient so during distance learning teachers of had to rethink delivery of instruction in a virtual setting as I observe glasses and doctor doctor gieringers also observes effective distance learning practices so let's go ahead and start with Miss Rodriguez do you want to meet yourself as well. Sorry about that thank you good evening everybody and you know part of art or learning and it and I something that I would come back with his we all know the phrase it takes a village to raise a child and we are definitely a village where a village of Berlin Heights Community but we also became a village of our own profession or own colleagues here at school I'm so very proud of teachers have taken the Bold move and they Incorporated nearpod lessons teachers who never thought they'd be able to do certain things they were so excited after a month we were reflected on what we call him grows and blows what were their clothes and they were just so excited that they had been able to incorporate a Google slide presentation a nearpod lesson they were doing padlet they were able to help the kids learn how to use the zoom features of real as I observe classes with my director Miss Sanchez and just by myself kindergarteners kindergarteners are using the zoom features kindergarteners are toggling between two scream we had an amazing we have an amazing staff here support staff who we can now over the phone we can walk parents through technology issues logging on if they've been kicked out if there's something's not coming on our staff has gotten so well it'd be able to do that we still welcome parents to come as of today I started tomorrow but they we now will be able to work with them so between teachers again that resiliency but I also would like to have the word perseverance because they I persevered through all of this we are doesn't kill us and makes us stronger and we are definitely a village of strength so I'm very very proud to be part of the Boyle Heights Community thank you Miss Rodriguez Miss Munoz entebbe you are absolutely right on my heart is with Second Street that was my first school absolutely it takes a village to raise a child and it takes a village to educate each other one of the things I'm most proud of their school in an emergency we started something called teacher practice clinics do side from professional development teachers are now teaching teachers this is happening after hours and they are choosing topics that are high interest to them that are making their distance learning more native more effective than engaging for students under applying that to their instruction but the best part is it's not just the teachers it's not you're also at the art teacher assistants so there's multiple layers of support our teacher assistants have practice clinics on a daily basis the goal isn't going to get better we want to get stronger provide more Target instruction for our students and they are in the classrooms with the teachers provided providing differentiated lessons with their babies and it's making a huge difference because I got paucity has been built on both level and families are seeing a difference we see a difference in our data and we definitely see a difference in our student engagement that's one of the things I'm very proud of and it's been highly effective for us thank you so much Miss Munoz and dr. Salazar who do we think about distance learning and one thing of we talked about not just with the children but ourselves as adults and were their parents and one thing I talk to her there are Jardin our whole Community is to learn everyday Learn login to schoology every day in the ER to learn to think about learn the letters of learn everything Zoom for your all your militant Stadium Zoom a alarm at 10 to your work your asynchronous work are you sinking his work and submit it and when you need help ask for help our respect each other online as we become digital citizens and we leave digital Footprints last respect each other online an AB learn never give up never give up because I'm going to stay on my topic one day and be our next president come from Boyle Heights learn everyday thank you so much doctor Salazar so we know and understand that our schools families and staff have experienced many challenges and hardships throughout the pandemic thank you for leading always principles with compassion and supporting our school communities how does your school overcome some of these challenges and we'll go ahead and start with mister on Google thank you so much definitely I believe me I know that many of us are or are dealing with a lot during this pain demica as a school probably one of our challenges has bid the distribution of resources such as books Wi-Fi come definitely other manipulatives for students and and the second one being the communication with parents in terms of ensuring that they follow up with how their students are doing monitoring productivity online ensuring that their grades are still also being submitted into work is being submitted so one thing that we really try to do at Utah Street is really big if and find the thought of gold safe ways of ensuring that our students receive what they need and sharing of course that we give them the support by providing various opportunities for pickups by providing death types of ways of actually receiving the material whether it be a drive-through whether it be diver times also ensuring that we have that personalization that we connect with family we're missing. During this time do you want to make sure that we have that connection with our parents and stirring up that are involved in the parent portal we're lucky to be at 63% which is great because initially we started at 22% so we're just moving forward of course it takes a village like everybody saying from our community rap with Maggie to our teacher that is machuca Chavez to our office staff everybody's doing their part thank you so much mr. Angulo us yes I like how I have connect to it and I'll push you look forward in some of the challenges that many public schools faces that student enrollment at funding for small high schools like myself to provide great customer service have lines of communication with our neighboring schools and have a great assistant we sure are students have a chance to graduate with a diploma and have options after high school this way when you sure that our parents students will attend our schools and want to be more involved and that one is 16 thank you solace yeah I'm going to piggyback on on on my colleague Mr Angulo it was mostly for US Weekly we've experienced a lot of challenges but we we've overcome them as a we've been overcome these as a team it hasn't been able to be alone and and and it's it's been a team to lead the ship and in our families the device you know passing out materials to our students has really in a way to how do we keep each everybody safe our families are students as well as our teachers coming in to prepare individualize practice per grade level are to pass out to our communities we were able to develop plans and strategize like mr. and will mention different ways of delivery drive-bys pickups personalized and and and really trying to accommodate the family's needs and some drop off at people's front yards. Just to to accommodate any way we could and also assisting some of our families because there's been a lot of need and we've had to support because we want to we want to help our families because we're still one we're still one Community one fast and we want that personalization so we've bills are been some of our our challenges but we've overcome because it's amazing hi everybody from our office you know saying I will go I will walk over I will drive by it's commendable how they've become Heroes themselves to be out there and support our family thank you Miss Solace thank you cuz we look the second semester what are your hopes what do you plan to accomplish before the end of the year but go ahead and start with Miss Rodriguez so in keeping with the themes of resilience and perseverance we we have a vision we have a dream as a Cabelas AR says yes the next part one of these days the president will come from Boyle Heights and with that is developing in our students those skills of resiliency perseverance and just them themselves wanting it the weather weather no matter what challenges in 2020 has definitely put lots of austere on our way but we're here we're here kids are learning as as you heard of mistake Jose we have students High rates of attendance so we want to keep that the projector going for the spring semester some of ours is definitely getting students to now BV facilitators of their learning online being the the breakout room leaders taking rolls on as they engage in conversations as they cite evidence is they try and figure out what the author the author's purpose was in the Upper Grade for kindergarteners first graders to be able to continue developing their technological skills of toggling between screens using their Zone features getting more involved with a nearpod in the activities at nearpod uses as well as the Google classroom and all of the activities that Google Suites offers also for our support you know it's funny or support staff has learn so much at this time the teachers we all went back to school and the support staff here at 2nd street that we're coming on site as well as the teachers in the the all rallied around each other and e as you go as stated yes we have teacher clinics also ours are on Wednesday nights at the teachers get together they teach each other I had a conference this morning a reflective conference and she said I feel like I'm the Google Alexa because victim Teresa so I suggest you are so they're they're discovering their own strength and when we can model that or students then they will do the same thing so ours is definitely stay on the trajectory thank you so much Miss Rodriguez for us so we're hopeful to be able to provide more targeted intervention during the school day and after school we know our students need it so making sure we find the resources in the online to also promote personalized learning for students so they can alone try to also support themselves and their needs in addition to that definitely promote more parent participation and promote current workshops that support our students and ensuring that they that the parents can support students at home in various ways so that they can do the work and also continue with Partnerships ensuring that we continue to partner with schools with translate Verizon or home to school or even our political Partners like possibly our board member or center of the Wrestlemania Santiago Kevin De Leon just to make sure that we provide the resources for families because we know that they need them that is so true thank you mr. Angulo and Miss Greco so if if you remember last year in the Boyle Heights Community we hosted the VEX IQ robotics tournament we actually also hosted a first Lego League challenge at our school last year so what we're hoping to do is to somehow adapt to the new situation and host some type of virtual or remote robotics competition the community we know it's a lot of work and that students also need ways to connect and do things that they love to do so besides the president I think we could have our next astronaut but come from Boyle Heights and our next robot engineer that we would love to to continue to work with mr. Craig sites from LTE and host some type of Robotics tournament for a student for yours to the elementary and middle school students and for our students to and if someone said we can and we will thank you so much thank you so much and said I feel so as we come to our clothes with our panel discussion let's have you eat share some words of encouragement message to Arbor Heights community and start with mr. Yes definitely. We hope that you keep your at your head up be positive it's been yet for the challenges and stay connected with family even if that's a phone call or social media message but I'll defend them against keeping us at home disconnected and they can lead to some up motion withdrawals right so it's one that we just connect with families with your phone call. social media messages stay connected dr. Salazar you know it's the president they're right here one of our ball has as president but moms and dads look at our children look at each other and is really simple even in learning and just say this I got this i got this you got this we got we got we can do it president is do it you're out there we got this thank you Miss Rodriguez she's going to a phrase that comes to mind is a loony Louis almost and we are we will move forward will be there we wish 2nd Street on behalf of 2nd Street We wish all of Boyle Heights we wish the Second Street families the staff we wish you all a very happy holidays because we are family we wish you safety we wish you good health and we wish you Vision Vision to what is going to be like when all of this is done and over cuz it's going to be a much better World in a beautiful place so thank you for everything one of those Summers valientes and that's all we'll go thank you mister on golo sew-in closure I just want to wish everybody of course the Hop a happy holiday with family please know that you're not alone please reach out to us we're here to support you I were all facing challenges and I know that that we're all trying our best you know at this time I remember the poem by Rumi I think it's called All Rivers at once would like what is the body endurance what is it gratitude what is it in our chests laughter and what else compassion so be kind to yourself be kind to your children be kind to your family all of the wonderful words thank you mr. Angulo I would just like to add that I think it's important for all of us to to Bri proud of everything we've accomplished so far and we had never lived a situation like this and I think the fact that we have into her learning from home and and families who have adopted and changed their schedules and we all have something to be proud of school staff and faculty and all the leaders in this room smile and be proud of yourselves and enjoy the holidays and the time that that will have off thank you it's Gonzalez I just want to wish the Lord in a community and all of the Boyle Heights community holidays but also remind everyone we will get through this there will be better times don't lose the hope I know things are tough right now and and it's not what we wanted and and you didn't get to do the crafts you wanted or are perfect I'm like you wanted to wear or take the picture with Santa but we will things will get better just stay safe stay home keep learning and keep smiling and soon we will be together and end full cast that we miss you and stay strong and stay smiling and last name is William my colleagues have already said it so beautifully and the one word that sticks to me as connect human connection is essential it's important they connected to your teachers they connected to each other they connected to administrators at the school site communicate well most important parents are babies tell them how much you love them they need to every single day and tell them as my colleagues I said where you get through this it's going to be okay this too shall pass we're going to be okay but you know you know so what do you say thank you so much principal thank you your words and act and acts of inspiration compassion and courage are just just so amazing thank you for what you do each and day for student staff and families are Boyle Heights community of schools and thank you for representing the ball Heights community of schools during this panel discussion but thank you once again and now we will continue with our town hall meeting agenda and gettinger will be speaking about the new safer at home order so thank you again to all of our principals they are just so it's such an inspirational leader and that's just a small sample of the amazing leadership that we have at each and every one of our Boyle
