I'd like to introduce our students these students were selected by their schools to represent their schools for our student town hall meeting so again students I will stop sharing I invite you to unmute yourself and please turn on your video other students come on we'll wait a few moments for students to come on and I'm going to ask her for our other members if you could please mute yourself and turn off your video mr. Franco if you could please turn off your video and I think Amy you're there just can't see you there you are okay great I think we're all on we are very excited to have our students joining us today welcome and thank you for Boyle Heights community of school students for part of our first student panel discussion our student panel discussion is about providing a form for ball High student voices and to understand the successes the challenges and call Sarah Boyle Heights students during distance learning be ready students take a deep breath guys we begin would like for our students to introduce themselves by sharing their name their grade their school something you're proud of are grateful for in your school community hi my name is Jocelyn Navarro, senior night at 10 Boyle Heights continuation school one thing that I'm grateful for it being able to participate something like this hi my name is Ivory send you I'm a 12 grader here at Boyle Heights continuation high school and something that I'm very proud of is my perseverance no matter what obstacles thrown at me I always overcome it and how we say it in Spanish no Comer Ajo my school is a tightly-knit community that we haven't I go to school I feel like I'm going somewhere that I'm welcome into a place that I'm part of the family Eminem is a mother charm 11. Boyle Heights STEM Magnet High School in September of our school is the opportunity to speak provide our students I'm proud of my community is the history go to 90% my name is hurting, I am Senior above its the magnet high school and I am very proud of how much my school prioritizes community outreach hi my name is Cesar I'm a senior and I 10 Metropolitan High School I am really grateful to even be attending the school just in general hello my name is innocent innocent yes I am a 7th grader and they said Hollenbeck Middle School school is all the opportunities they have in general because I think they're really good and I'm really hello my name is Haley Rodriguez I'm a 7th grader and I attended Utah Street school for elementary and now Middle School something I'm grateful for my school is a talent show talents at the end hi my name is Daniela Gutierrez I'm a 7th grader at Eutaw Street school and I've attended Utah Street school for my entire academic career and I'm very grateful that my school give out iPads and hot spots to students indeed thank you students thank you students and welcome you're going to go ahead and start with the first question we know that since the beginning of school closures in March there have been many ups and downs maybe in your personal life in your school life and possibly in your neighborhoods Sherwin to positive Ana challenging experience in distance learning and how you overcame start with Stellaluna something that I found myself and so if you're struggling with is developing self discipline especially in this time and distance learning it a lot of times to stay committed School especially when out of a pandemic and with everything going on in the country at the moment and it's really easy to say Plano High School class today or I'm just wondering this time and I'll time but I signed that myself and my fear is already rising to The Challenge Games new good habits and rebuild self discipline at home and so I'm pretty proud of that and so I know that once we get back into the classroom that self-discipline that we bill is going to pay off thank you so much Stella Luna thank you for reminding us about the various distraction you've had during this time in and the self-discipline dad that use developed as a result of it a something that was buried call Fermin was technology issues as I'm very like we struggle with money I requested a computer and a hotspot from my school would I receive an item and stay on top of my class has also there was a very difficult time in my personal life when we were struggling with money and so I went to work with my dad for two weeks over the summer and night even if I was working I still managed to stay in class and stugotz top of my assignments and I wasn't second off I was on my I was working hard and persevering through everything thank you so much say thank you Syed for for your honesty and for sharing us for sharing with us the struggles that you've been going through as a result of this I think I think many many students would be able to relate to you continue online learning time is procrastination time management at my assignments and accept that I could just finish them tomorrow so I could do the last minute or I do them but I don't send them in so I feel like I have a problem a lot and I also have some problem with time because I tell myself I look at my phone 5 minutes and then it turns into an hour I have some problems with that but I've been managing it by getting my Simon stuff first when will being on to the things I can do or sometimes I do the opposite I do the things I can do throughout the day and throughout the night thank you, dear. Thank you for reminding us how how many of you have probably dealt with procrastination and how also thinking about time management which is something that also Stellaluna related to and how you work through it so thank you once again and I think we'll Lena a challenge that I have experience with distance learning in his mental health because it has been difficult and unmotivated to be at home all day because of covid-19 and have to worry about my personal life and school life but what is happening adapts is just communicating with friends family teaches cuz I find it soothing just to talk about feelings and emotions out and when you communicate with teachers are going to the pandemic as well so they we are going through thank you Angelina thank you for reminding us about social emotional issues that right now both students families staff are dealing with and and how you're creating support. I want you to help you through that number two when You Face challenges what keeps you motivated where do you find inspiration the timeline Andy start when I face challenges I find my motivation in my family but especially my brother's because they've always been very supportive of everything that I've done and I just look up to them a lot so I want to graduate from high school and college just like thank you it's it's it's awesome that I think you have two older brothers that are mentors and role models for you on and that you're looking up to them besides the time you share a few words when I faced challenges I often find that my teachers are will keep me motivated because they often approaching the opportunities and experiences they feel will better prepare me for the future and so the way I have seen it is that they're investing in me and so I should be making sure that they receive it returns wow great words yes in terms of their investing in you they're investing in in all of you here students do teachers or families and how they're they're reminding you and providing you tuna tees on throughout this Caesar that served you continue on well when I faced challenges I tend to want to be grateful towards things because you know everything that's happened before obstacles and they are input into your path just because you know they're put into your path for a reason and you know I believe that being able to be grateful towards the things that you are put into your life may ask me how and you know it kind of allows you to just be open for yourself and now I'm bring yourself down towards things are happening when at the end of the day things will be better once you can feel towards thank you thank you for reminding us about being grateful and also your optimistic attitude and and looking at obstacles as as a growth opportunity so I should think about their next question for you to think about when school reopens what should teachers principals District leaders the superintendent prioritize or focus on what type of Gabriella start when school reopens I feel like this trip leaders teachers and adults children look up to in the school should prioritize making other students more comfortable because I feel Mister dance like me was supposed to enter new school but instead. Online learning should take some time to get used to the new gears as well as the new surroundings in the area because it could be difficult for some other students are having similar that's mine I feel like once again that we should prioritize making children students and everybody in general they're comfortable with what they're experiencing Frankie Beverly and I thank you for remind is that although we find ourselves now in October that as we reopen schools we need to remember that there are some students that are new to the school and weather be in elementary and middle school or high school and that still haven't necessarily gotten to know their peers and and that's something we need to keep in mind as we reopen schools let's move to a model I believe I may go back District leadership focus and prioritize the safety of our students and staff in the family's at home if you do not take preventative measures to ensure everyone's safety even if a vaccine is released I can be devastating effects to our community thank you my love thank you for it's about safety safety is our priority I know it's our superintendent priority and it's our priority so we want to ensure we do take preventive measures something. being the Distributors to pick and count is all the students who are going to be struggling to catch up Magid Emily because as of right now everyone is just meeting deadlines turning inward and not a lot of people are actually like taking in the information and actually learning they're just turning in their work and I think we should really focus on the students who will need the help and will left behind you know so that we so focus on the students that need the help I think what you're saying is very very important and knowing that I think we're all struggling in one way or another and as you're talking about possibly struggling academic is ensuring that we had we think about the transition that students are making back to school that focus on ensuring that their that they're academically that they do begin to do do well and we'll go ahead and end with Jocelyn one school reopens I believe the teachers the principles and counselors to focus on Earth sentence our grades in our credit since like during this week we've been doing everything online and I feel like everyone's been like slacking off probably like failing most of the classes wow I hope I hope that's not true Jocelyn but but you're right we knew we do we do we need to focus attendance on grades and academics and ensuring that we put structures in place so that if some of your falling behind we have safety nets where we're going to bring you back up so I think meant what all mentioned I think is very very important for all of us at schools to keep in mind and also our district leadership so who in your school knows you who is an adulterer Community member that supports you who are you able to lean on during these times let's go ahead and start with Haley pacifically my sixth grade teacher moved sugar supportive and motivated me to keep trying when sitting my Simon's got too difficult I'm sure miss bernales smiling or someone will let his Bernards know and and I'm glad you're able to identify a person teacher I think that's important that's important for all of us to do be able to identify an adult in the school the continue with our motto Center School small almost all students and teachers know each other I participate extracurricular activities such as messing up RCN have gotten to meet people younger and older if I had to name two teachers in particular that support me I would name Mister my own and Miss Hernandez have supported me throughout my timer and have a good meal opportunities materials and advice for anything that I need thank you thank you again for sharing all the two teachers that are supported you and I think what was also important is the support system you have with with you joined activities to join you specifically mentioned and I think that's important that as we return to school to ensure that we connect with some of those activities that we were part of Matilda Angelina play I would like to talk about that has really helped me this year and how great they are I want to have the grades I do right now and I would not be motivated or hopeful toward my teacher this year is also crucial because I'm going to talk later so I'm sitting in all my college application all the deadlines are coming up and some other radio open up applications and another Supply system that I would like to shout out as LPS teachers at Roosevelt because they've been so helpful and understanding and really amazing thank you for that shout out today LPS teachers and also you mention Upward Bound and you're a senior and I think a few others are seniors as well and how some of those that organization specifically is helping you tutoring and college applications which which is something that is due pretty soon and we want to ensure that that your remaining on track towards that so during this time not only have we been living through a pandemic our communities and Nation have faced many challenges and social and all of these events impact and drill or influence your thinking right now especially with sensation next news and social media it's a lot to take in because students and parents and teachers and everyone in the district is always getting news about what's going on in the world is going bad and it can feel overwhelming because it seems like there's all these problems facing the nation at once I can feel like there's no hope for fixing them just because of how big they are but something that I remind myself when I start to feel like this is that if you want to make a change like let's say that you're frustrated over voter turnout you can't go and change the minds and get all of these of a Nation to vote but you can probably make some more go to your community there's someone in your community that only you can reach out to and that's you can connect with that you can make them. Jamaican change something. On Alexandria ocasio-cortez said and that I take the heart and so what happens is that when we can change our community our nation is made of small community stop changing our nation starts with communities I think Alexandria ocasio-cortez will be very proud of you right now and the words you shared and how change the starting our community pacifically are Boyle Heights community and how we watch all of this it might appear overwhelming but in terms of ensuring that that we just take it a step at a time thank you so much that it's going to Jocelyn these events have impacted my thinking because like during the protest I felt like no one was safe no one really like acknowledge that there was like coronavirus out there and I had I had noticed and I seen on the news that no one was really like bring the mask and they were like all bunched up together and saw it was just like scary and overall mean that like no one really cared about that I felt like they were going to probably spread like the virus even more in our community and yeah thank you Jocelyn thank you for reminding us about how are some of us that that might be scary it might be something that as we as we view the news you know safety is something thinking about so thank you for your honesty and we'll go ahead and end with a psy.d during this time I have been seeing these events all over social media and so much more often that it has really opened my eyes to the fact we desperately need real change and she mention that we shouldn't we shouldn't waiver and we just keep on hoping and understand that change is possible when we Ford parts thank you thank you for reminding us about keeping hope alive and and in terms of awareness than that and and reiterating what I think Stellaluna also mention and the others is that we do need change and how each of you are part of it and ensuring that change begins in your community so let's think about what advice would you give to your younger self if you knew then what you know now what advice would you give to your younger self let's go ahead and start with an l e a piece of advice that I would give to mind yourself need to be true to yourself and to never listen to what others say about you because when I was younger I went through a lot of bullying and that made me stop doing what I loved and eventually became a person that I didn't want but now that I'm older I realize that people say about you doesn't matter because you determine who you are you determine who you are great words of advice Haley advice I give to my younger self with an L I have now would be to try your best even when things get really difficult or challenging not to be hard on yourself try your best go back to you saying advice that I would give to my younger self with the knowledge I have now is to really be more open to opportunities that come your way and do sees them because I'm put your best foot forward they can be unbelievably fulfilling definitely in terms of being open to opportunities that come your way thank you and Stella Luna I think that's something that a lot of some parents going to worry about for the kid is that they're being judged by their peers but one thing that I think all students are aware of is that we're being judged a lot constantly because we're being tested we're doing College admissions process where going through taking so many tests and I will become numbers and I need to feel like those numbers are judgments of ourselves and our self words that I would tell my younger self is that self-worth myself at link to my academic success or any other external measure of success at that because it's so easy to feel like your best efforts are not because they don't match your number but you need to be fat but you deserve to feel good about yourself not because of anything you've because there's going to be so something that I kind of tried to practice is I'm taking a break I shouldn't be taking a break because I've done work I should be taking a break because I'm a human being tired and I deserve it. and that I would definitely tell me about yourself whilst I was one of those are great your self-worth is not linked to your academic success and I think that goes back to Woodside mansion with Jocelyn mentioned Madonna Lee mentioned in terms of you know as you've struggled or as you struggle through distance learning is is knowing that that doesn't that doesn't necessarily you know measure who you are ants and also thank you for reminding us about the social emotional process of this and ensuring that you do you do deserve a break and you should take time for yourself as I come to an end I'd like to eat each of you to show what are your future goals what problem do you hope to solve in the future where do you see yourself what would you like to do I will go ahead and and have each of you share out do you want to begin yes in the future I see myself working to combat the threat of global climate change great show you the time you go next all goal that I have after I graduate high school is helping all my family because they've done so much for me they've been having done so many sacrifices me being a child from suing a grandparent I think they really done so many sacrifices for me and I just really want to give back to them after I graduate and make them feel good about everything they've done for me thank you say it I know your parents are very proud of you I see myself in the future and then University because that's really my goal in general right now since I'm right now I'm just a 7th grader but my my goal is to get into a good school and hopefully make it to the university all of my steps my aunt many will not consider successful but to me she's my I don't just like someone I would want to be in the future she's kind of like what's going to get me up there because she's always been so kind to me helpful and I love her so I feel like I should try to get something back to her that's great that's great I'm sure your aunt is very very proud of you and I know you'll be successful in the future I see myself as a singer or songwriter and I'd like to use my platform to spread Awareness on the topic of homelessness because I personally a lot of people who have experienced homelessness and I'd like to help them live a better lifestyle and be healthy and happy that's awesome that's awesome for you to already think about how you'll use your platform and especially for your shoes that are happy in our community like homelessness in the future I would like to develop games and use that as a way to inspire future generations to pursue a career in a stem field wow awesome and that's why you're there at that's the STEM Magnet Haley I'm in the future I see myself becoming a cardiologist because I love learning about human body and I'm very interested in how it work because I want to help people worship thank you Haley thank you thank you for knowing specifically the career your career path Caesar let's have you go next I I see myself as being a boy to have the capability of making people smile on his ever having a bad day being able to bring their days up and to let them know that her smile is worth it and Young Justice DMV near what you just just just just have their days light up and that's got to be a fashion line thank you Caesar and I know I know you you you evoke other people to smile just with your presence alone thank you for your positivity in your optimism Jocelyn in about 5 years I see myself graduating from UCLA and after that I possibly see myself training for the FBI awesome UCLA and then the FBI great Angelina in the future I want to obtain energy green business and I want to be ninja. I see myself owning a business that empowers others and business because I think I could do it and that really would one day Imma have my own business and I'm sure you will I know you will be and I and I love the way that your business being an entrepreneur is about empowering others that is awesome in the future I see myself as an engineer helping further my community interest in the stem field and inspiring the youth to find the joy and Engineering that I found wow that is great both of you Wyndham East I am sure mr. heckles very proud of you and terms of being so inspirational to others about the stem field cuz we know we need more Latinos more women more students pursuing the stem field this was awesome thank you so much I would like to thank all our Boyle Heights students your words are powerful I think you need to know that their inspiring their thought-provoking and I encourage you to continue to use your voice in your school on in your community to spark awareness and change and so I thank you once again I thank you for taking the time to be part of this and and for sharing your words of wisdom with us the ball Heights community and all our community so thank you thank you once again
